PK Boosters and Bloom Supplements: What Works, What Doesn't

Every nutrient company sells a bloom booster — extra phosphorus and potassium to fatten buds. Some deliver real results. Others are expensive water. How PK boosters work, when to use them, which ones are worth buying, and how to avoid the common overdose that actually shrinks your yield.

PK boosters — supplements heavy in phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) — are the most aggressively marketed products in the cannabis nutrient industry. The promise: bigger, denser, heavier buds. The reality is more nuanced. PK boosters can increase yield when used correctly, but overuse is one of the most common causes of late- flower nutrient problems.

What PK boosters do

During flower, cannabis shifts its nutrient demand. Vegetative growth consumed mostly nitrogen. Flower formation demands more phosphorus (for energy transfer, flower initiation, and resin production) and potassium (for enzyme activation, water regulation, and bud density).

Base bloom nutrients already contain elevated P and K compared to veg formulas. PK boosters add extra P and K on top of your base nutrients during the peak flowering weeks when demand is highest.

The biology

  • Phosphorus drives ATP (energy) production, which fuels flower development, root growth, and trichome formation. Phosphorus demand peaks during weeks 3–6 of flower
  • Potassium regulates water movement in cells, activates dozens of enzymes, and is critical for dense bud formation. Potassium demand increases throughout flower and peaks during weeks 5–7

When to use PK boosters

The window: weeks 3–6

Most PK boosters are designed for mid-flower:

Week of flowerPK booster use
1–2 (stretch)No — still transitioning nutrients
3–4 (bud formation)Light dose (50% of label)
4–5 (bud swell)Full dose (peak P and K demand)
5–6 (fattening)Full dose or beginning to taper
7+ (ripening)Taper off; most growers stop PK boosters
Final 1–2 weeksNo PK booster; plain water or reduced feed

The 2-week sweet spot

Weeks 4–5 of flower are the highest-leverage weeks for PK supplementation. This is when calyx production is at maximum rate and the buds are actively building mass. Before week 3, the buds aren't developed enough to use extra PK. After week 6, the plant is ripening and slowing nutrient uptake.
